The bitter-sweet pills provided a temporary refuge, casting a numbing shadow over the ghosts of his past as he succumbed to the elusive embrace of sleep. It seemed, the dark days were finally getting over and good times were knocking at the door. It’s always good to keep clinging on to hope.
Even the weakest straw of hope can make the journey called life a little lighter and worth it. The journey towards redemption and forgiveness had begun. Hope, not lost, was bearing fruits. The thought of finally being one with Richard, whom she had missed dearly, filled her with an indescribable joy. She couldn’t help but reflect upon her life journey thus far, and reached a conclusion…, we humans are but pawns of destiny. We like to think that we can take charge of the future by planning for it, and that, if we keep making concerted effort in the right direction with a set goal, we can be masters of our fate.
But the fact is that life has its own way of taking over and changing our path towards the destined, no matter how best we plan and try. With time we however realize, God’s plan is the best plan. Life had been tough on him…had pushed him over the edge too many times, thrown him into the raging vortex but he had survived living this perfectly imperfect fragile life. However, now at this moment today, all of it seemed surreal and sweet… worthwhile and satisfying! He had all the reasons to thank God!!

The wind whistled through the towering pines of Manali as Hazel tightened her scarf, her cheek flushed from the cold. Richard stood ready with his bike, his fingers clasping the handlebars, his intense eyes urging her to hurry.
“Come on Hazel. The mountain won’t wait forever,” he teased, his breath visible in the frosty air.
“I’m coming,” she replied, rolling her eyes but smiling, nonetheless. She climbed onto the pillion behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. The roar of the engine echoed through the serene valley as they sped off, the winding roads carrying them deeper into the rugged beautiful Himalayan terrain.
They stopped at a secluded overlooking nook, where the world seemed to stretch endlessly beyond them. Hazel leaned against Richard’s shoulder, her hair catching the golden hues of the setting sun. “Do you ever think about the future?” She asked softly.
Richard, pulling her closer said in tender voice, “All the time I think about you, about us. Everything else is just noise”.
It was a moment that felt eternal, yet fleeting, as though time itself held its breath for them. Everything about that evening became a memory that Richard and Hazel would carry in their heart forever.

I am an author, novelist, poet and speaker. I began my professional journey as a management trainee with a financial institution in New Delhi. After a brief stint I eventually shifted to academia as a senior faculty member of business management. Having been born and brought-up in a family of scholars and book lovers with shared passion for reading and literature, I developed an early fascination with fiction books, especially thrillers and dreamt of becoming a fiction writer one day.
